When you are travelling in Thailand and wish to visit Laos I would give you some advice.
To travel from Thailand to Laos ,there are some connect border between Thailand and Laos which is open for the people of the two countries to cross the border and visit each other and here are some name of the provinces and the check point where you can cross the border to visit Laos.
1 In the northern of Thailand : Chiang Rai province,
2 In the north eastern : Loie province,Nakorn panom province,Mukdahan Province,and Ubonratchatanee Province
Which is the best recommend from me well I think it depend upon where are you traveling now if you went to Ubonratchatanee Provine I would recommend you cross the border at the only share land together call Chong-Meg border ,because of its local beauty and culture where you can make a couple days border pass to visit Laos and come back to Thailand as the same day or the others days and as I have told you Chong-meg border is a share land between the 2 countries so it has a road to connect to each other ,so it is very convenient to travel whereas the rest of Thailand and Laos border has a river Khong as a blockage ,so you need to either a boat or plane to cross the river.
